The “Lowe” Road
Home Improvement superstore Lowe’s has managed to get a whole lot of press just in time for the holidays. The home improvement giant pulled its advertising from TLC’s “controversial” program All-American Muslim. Who says the show is controversial? Well, the Florida Family Association did. See the following quote from the FFA…no,really…this is a REAL quote *insert eye roll*
“The show profiles only Muslims that appear to be ordinary folks while excluding many Islamic believers whose agenda poses a clear and present danger to the liberties and traditional values that the majority of Americans cherish.”
Soooo, you mean to tell me, you want to boycott the show….because the Muslims portrayed….AREN’T terrorists??????? And what’s up with the “appear to be ordinary folks” part? And then Lowe’s decides to pull the advertising? Is this really happening? See how John Stewart and The Daily Show weigh in:
And while, of course, this is super hilarious, and clearly very tongue-in-cheek, let’s be serious for a moment. What is going on in the world? Are we really that intolerant? It’s one thing for the FFA to call for a boycott of All-American Muslim. I mean, we all but expect groups like the FFA to pull stunts like this, but it’s QUITE surprising for Lowe’s to cave in to such groups. And to add insult to injury, Lowe’s facebook page has begun to delete postings opposing their decision. Well, guess what, Lowe’s? This is the era of social networking, so this conversation is happening…with or without you.
In support of the show and in response to Lowes pulling ads, hip hop mogul Russell Simmons had been tweeting his displeasure and even attempted to buy ad space during All-American Muslim (Ad space was subsequently sold out.) Recently, Simmons tweeted this “You keep your money, Lowe’s. And we’ll keep ours”
Well said, Mr. Simmons, well said.
